The History of Orthopaedics

The word “orthopaedic” comes from the Greek word “ortho” meaning straight and “paed” meaning child. Lingustically, our specialty originated in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of children. A formal specialty of orthopaedics was not recognized until around World War I, again partly as a result of the need for care of injured soldiers. It was then realized that special training was needed for a physician to be trained in this specialty.

As a fellow resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee it is my pleasure to help residents of our great community. Many people suffer with some form of upper extremity pain and disability. Injuries to your hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders can cause severe pain. We use these areas of our bodies everyday and we should not have to suffer through pain.

The hand is a unique area of the human body. We use our hands every day for work and sports. If you have pain in your upper extremity you may want to consult a hand surgeon.

I am a partner at Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance. I have gained great satisfaction helping so many people. As we move forward into the future I hope to help many more residents of Middle Tennessee recover from injuries and get back to work and sports.

The Importance of a Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon

A hand and upper extremity surgeon has trained for 5 years in orthopaedic surgery and then spends an additional year with specialized training in hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder injuries and diseases. Hand and upper extremity surgeons treat adults and children.
